How will bidding take place?

IPL 2025 auction is a mega auction, and it’s because every three years, the IPL franchises undergo a reset of sorts. They can retain a small number of players- max six players- and rebuild their squads during the mega auction. This is where bidding comes to help these franchises in making the strongest playing XI and bench strength.

So, here is the bidding process for IPL 2025-

The marquee players (top Indian and overseas names) will be considered first for bidding, separated into two groups of six each. Then in the next round, capped players will be divided into sets based on their playing abilities: bowlers, batters, allrounders, fast bowlers, wicketkeeper-batters, and spin bowlers. After this round, the bidding will take place for uncapped players based on their specialisation. After player No. 116 (subject to timings), the bidding will go up, covering all players from 117 to 574. Once it is done, franchises will be asked to put the names of unsold players from the full list who will go up for auction once more in another accelerated phase.

How many players can the teams buy at theTata IPL auction 2025?

Whether it’s CSK or MI, there are maximum and minimum squad sizes for each franchise. A franchise can have a maximum of 25 and a minimum of 18 players, so there is a maximum of overall 250 players. Across all 10 franchises, forty-six players (46) have already been retained, leaving a maximum of 204 placed to fill during the IPL 2025 auction. From 70 overseas slots, each franchise can have a maximum of eight (8) overseas players.

  • DC: 21 slots (7 overseas)
  • RR: 19 slots (7 overseas)
  • PBKS: 23 slots (8 overseas)
  • KKR: 19 slots (6 overseas)
  • GT: 20 slots (7 overseas)
  • LSG: 20 slots (7 overseas)
  • CSK: 20 slots (7 overseas)
  • RCB: 22 slots (8 overseas)

  • MI: 20 slots (8 overseas)

What is the Right to Match (RTM) Option in Tata IPL 2025 Auction?

BCCI allowed IPL franchises to retain up to six (6) players this time- of which a maximum of five (5) capped players and a maximum of two (2) can be uncapped players. Those six (6) players either be retained before the auction, can be bought using RTM (Right-to-Match) options at the bidding, or a mix of both.

So here is the complete RTM process-

If a player has been acquired by another franchise during the mega auction, the franchise that the player originally belonged to in IPL 2024 can intervene at the end of the bidding process. They have the option to buy back their player using the Right to Match (RTM) option by matching the highest bid. Post that, the IPL team that got the winning bid will be provided another opportunity to raise the auction to whatever amount they want. If it happens, the player’s previous team will need to match the raised price to buy back the player.

PBKS has retained only two players, giving them the most options for Right to Match (RTM) at the auction with four available. RCB, which retained three players, has three RTM options. On the other hand, the Delhi Capitals, who retained four players, have two RTM options. Five teams—MI, CSK, GT, SRH, and LSG—each retained five players and had just one RTM option available at the auction. Meanwhile, RR and KKR have no RTM options.

Of course, a franchise can buy back as many players as it wants if it places the highest bid for them during regular bidding at the auction.
